Le et La
Maron Inconnu(e)
Two gold figures. A call to rise. A sculpture and prints about the voice that gathers people together.
A call for those history never named.
The Unknown Maroon is a monument in Port-au-Prince: a figure who escaped slavery, kneeling, blowing a conch shell to call others to rise.
Le et La Maron Inconnu(e) gives that call two voices, one male and one female, covered in gold leaf. Beneath them, broken amber and clear glass set in resin. A blade lies at the front. The shells are raised to be heard.
Here the figures stand before the Canadian flag and Parliament Hill, placing the call in Ottawa, where I make my work.
